Photograph: Abraham Lincoln Lying in State in New York City. This touching photograph of Lincoln in his casket, measuring 9.25" x 7.25" (sight), was taken by Gurney & Son at New York City Hall on April 24, 1865. At the head of the casket stands Admiral Charles H. Davis, at the foot General Edward D. Townsend; both men are looking on with arms crossed. The photograph has been matted to an overall size of 13" x 11". Matting shows spots of foxing and mounting remnants on the verso.

Shortly after this photograph (one of a series) was taken, Mrs. Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton had the negatives confiscated and destroyed. The photographs were thus lost to history until this one lone albumen image was discovered by a fourteen year old boy in the papers of John G. Nicolay, the private secretary to Lincoln. The one remaining photograph had been kept in secret by Stanton and was later passed on to his son. Upon the discovery, the Illinois state historian, Dr. Harry Pratt, made a platinum copy of the image (this very photograph), which he then gave to collector and journalist, Warren J. Harder, with a label attached to the matting giving the history of the image.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
