    Period Fair Copy of General Ulysses S. Grant's Letter to General Robert E. Lee in a secretarial hand. One page, 8" x 10", with docket on verso and written entirely in pencil. "Hd. Qrs. Army U States Appomattox C.H. Apr 9th 1865." In full: "Genl. R.E. Lee Comdg C.S.A. Genl. In accordance with the substance of my letter to you of the 8th inst. I propose to receive the surrender of the Army of N. Va on the following terms, to wit -- Rolls of all officers & men to be made in duplicate, one copy to be given to an officer to be designated by me the other to be retained by such officer or officers as you may designate. The Officers to give their individual paroles not to take up arms against the Government of the United States until properly exchanged; and each company or regt comd to sign a like parole for the men of their commands. The arms, artillery, and public property to be parked and stacked and turned over to the officers appointed by me to receive them. This will not embrace the sidearms of the officers, nor their private horses or baggage. This done, each officer and man will be allowed to return to his home, not to be disturbed by U. S. authority so long as they observe their paroles and the laws in force where they may reside. Very Respectfully U.S. Grant Lt. Gen'l."

    At lower left are written the name of O[sman] Latrobe and John W. Kerr who served in the Adjutant General Department of the Confederate Army. Latrobe is listed as being present at Appomattox. Beneath Grant's name is written "official" with the illegible name of an aide de camp.

    Condition: Heavy wear and wrinkling and tiny bits of paper loss occurring at folds. Some chipping and small separations at folds at margins.
