Oliver Cromwell Commonwealth Proclamation Broadside. One oversized page, 11.25" x 20.25", London, October 11, 1649 (Printed October 12, 1649 by John Field). Resolves of Parliament requiring and "Engagement" of loyalty to the Commonwealth: "I do Declare and Promise, That I will be true and faithful to the Commonwealth of England, as the same is now Established, without a King or House of Lords."

Oliver Cromwell had seized control in England after the execution of Charles I on January 30, 1649. He then established the "Commonwealth of England". The change in power created much controversy regarding the population's loyalties, either to the King or to the newly appointed government. The Engagement was a statement that many were made to take, in order to indicate their shift in allegiance. Ex. R. Douglas Stuart.

Condition: Paper is fragile and toned throughout. Small, clean tear at bottom center. Areas of staining in places, does not affect text legibility. It is affixed along the top to a board.
