    Description

Wallpaper Newspaper: The Opelousas Courier. Vol. 11, No. 24, one page, 14" x 19.5", Opelousas [Louisiana], April 25, 1863. Printed on recto of green/white/yellow/brown floral wallpaper due to a paper shortage throughout the South. Published in Union-occupied Opelousas, Louisiana, it features the following quote next to the title: "The Union, it must and shall be Preserved" by Andrew Jackson. Reprinting of Special Orders No. 102 has been bracketed in ink.

In the "Personal" column appears an attempt at humor at the expense of Confederate prisoners: "Captain Semmes, C. S. Light Artillery, and Commodore Fuller, C. S. Navy...are on a visit to New Orleans where they will be the guest of General Bowen...We understand that some of them are anxious to return, but that their business engagements are of such a character as will probably render their stay in the Crescent city one of some duration."

Some bleed-through of the wallpaper ink on recto. Horizontal and vertical fold is torn and cello-taped in one place. Edges have small breaks along the creasing. Some repair on left edge; folds are weakened. Very scarce.
