The Polynesian: First Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

February 6, 1841, 4pp., fine. This very early and very rare Hawaii English language newspaper contains a front page printing (extending onto page 2 for a total of 7 columns of text) of the first Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii (the Constitution of 1840). It is signed in type by Hawaiian King Kamehameha III. The 1840 Constitution was Hawaii's first detailed constitution and it established a governmental structure for the Hawaiian Kingdom. It confirmed the authority of island governors who had been appointed by the king, and created a two-body legislative council with a house of nobles and a house of representatives chosen by the people. The 1840 Constitution also created a judicial system which included a supreme court. The supreme court was comprised of the king, the kuhina nui (prime minister or regent), and four others appointed by the house of representatives. The constitution was written by King Kauikeaouli and Premier Kekauluohi. It was enacted on October 8, 1840 and published in The Polynesian on Feb. 6, 1841.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
