    Description

The Colorado Reveille Newspaper, First Issue. Bastrop, Texas, four pages, 13.75" x 20", November 29, 1851, "Vol. I No. I." This rare issue is the inaugural issue - "our appearance before you for the first time" - of Bastrop's first newspaper, which was published from 1851 until 1853 by "Desha & Kelly."

The Library of Congress supposes that the Reveille began in 1852 because the earliest copy known has been Vol. 1, no. 6, dated June 24, 1852. Now that this issue - Vol. 1, no. 1 - has surfaced, it appears the paper was printed erratically, despite the front page announcement that "The Colorado Reveille will be published Every Saturday." According to this first issue, the editor, R. Desha Jr., a recent arrival to Bastrop, knew that the paper wouldn't initially be printed "every Saturday": "Our next number," he writes on page two, "we hope to issue in three weeks." Further reading shows that one reason was that a press Desha had ordered from New Orleans had not yet arrived. Another reason was that there were too few advertisements and subscriptions, likely because, as the new arrival writes, "our acquaintance is quite limited in this country." A stable printing schedule for the newspaper would have to wait on a dependable press and funds. Fragile condition with separations along folds; the top half of page one has completely separated. Toned and foxed with some holes and tears.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
