    Description

George Washington: Newspaper Death Notices. Two unusual newspapers are included in this lot. The first is an error or proof page of the [New York] Gazette, undated. Pages 1 and 4 are blank. Page 3 describes Washington's Funeral Procession in New York that took place on January 3, 1800. The description is contained within black borders. Three of the ads describe theatrical productions and souvenir items produced to mark the solemn occasion. Page 2 contains primarily commercial news and ads. The other newspaper is "J. Russell's Gazette" dated January 20, 1800. It contains Henry Lee's Funeral Oration on the front page and a description of a Roxbury funeral observance for GW on page two, complete with a coffin woodcut. The paper, somewhat delicate with separation at the folds, has black borders.
