New England merchant's ledger containing the account of "Negro" Cato Gardner

New England Merchant's Ledger with entries dating from 1782 through 1788, including the account of Cato Gardner, a "Negro". A large velum bound notebook, 11.5" x 18.25", with 228 filled pages (of 400 total) listing detailed entries for various patrons; including ships, army officers, and at least two "Negro[es]."

Most notably listed is the account of Cato Gardner, who is identified as a "Negro". Gardner was a blacksmith by trade who raised significant funds for the building of the African Meeting House in Boston. His account occupies the bottom of page 50 and two-thirds of page 170. Page 171 contains the account entries for James Booze, also identified as a "Negro".

The merchant also identified his clients by their trade and town. There are several accounts for the Arnold family of Warwick, Rhode Island; as well as entries for Col. Israel Angell of the Second Rhode Island Regiment. Additional listed towns include Newport, Smithfield, Nantucket, Taunton, and Bedford.

Accounts are also listed for various ships including the schooner Nancy, brig Providence, brig Dolphin, sloop Delaware, sloop Smithfield, and the schooner Friendship. In addition to sales made, the ledger also includes entries for loans, notes, and bonds. All pages are present although two are disbound, with cracked interior joints, and loose spine.
