Mounted Photograph of General Dan Sickles' Leg. Measuring 6.5" x 8.5", the bones of Sickles' lower leg are seen in this undated photograph taken at the Army Medical Museum (modern National Museum of Health and Medicine) at Silver Spring, Maryland. Affixed to a mount to an overall size of 10.75" x 13.5" with a description of the piece, "Specimen No. 1335. Right Tibia and Fibula comminuted by a Cannon Ball," and a brief description of the circumstances around the loss of the leg. Mount shows foxing and light toning.

Gen. Sickles (1819-1914) lost the lower portion of his right leg during the afternoon of the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. While on horseback, he was hit by a twelve pounder of solid shot, shattering both bones of the lower leg. His leg was amputated just above the knee and the following day he was transferred to Washington. The bones he donated to the museum can still be seen today.
