Massachusetts Bay Slave Receipt. One page, penned on recto and verso, 6.25" x 7.75", Boston, October 23, 1739. Very handsome document signed by "Richard Champion of Boston" noting that he has "Bargained and Sold Relieved, granted and confirmed, and by these presents do Bargain and sell unto Ebenezer Crafts of Roxbury, Cordwainer, a Negro Girl named Dina, about Eleven Years old; together with all her Wearing Apparrell [sic]..." for the sum of "One hundred pounds in good and passable Bills of New England." Crafts would presumably use Dina to assist in his work as a cordwainer, someone who makes shoes and other articles from fine, soft leather. Beautifully penned, with a red wax seal on verso, this document shows moderate wear with old repairs to fold tears. Accompanied by the original outer wrapper, also worn with fold separation repairs.
