    Description

Marshal Daniel P. Upham Signed 1880 Fort Smith Document. Although Upham served as a U.S. Marshal from 1876 to 1880, he is most important for his role in Reconstruction Arkansas. A Union veteran who came to Arkansas after the War and bought a large plantation, he was active in combating the well-organized Ku Klux Klan and in working for the ratification of the 14th Amendment. The Reconstruction Republican governor named Upham head of the Woodruff County militia, and he led troops in many violent encounters with the Klan, including a pitched battle involving hundreds of combatants when the Klan sought to burn and pillage his plantation. When his political patron lost his governorship, Upham lost his marshal's job and was tried for the murder of four Klansmen. He was acquitted, but remained a hated name all across the South.

This July 1880 document signed by Upham is a pay voucher for a bailiff of the Fort Smith Court.
