    Description

Mark Twain / Jean Clemens: Personally-Owned Binoculars and Wooden Bank. Pair of leather-covered glass binoculars, 4" across and 3.5" tall, stamped "12 Glasses". According to accompanying Letters of Provenance, this pair of "Tiffany & Co." binoculars were acquired by Ernest & Annie Vetter Koppe, caretakers at Twain's Quarry Farm in Elmira, New York. "[they] were personally used by Twain to view the sweeping landscape of the river valley below the farm while sitting in the study." It also indicates that the wooden coin bank offered in this lot was purchased by Twain while on vacation in Europe and "was a gift from Twain to his daughter Jean" and bequeathed to the Koppe's after Jean's death in 1909. The bank measures 3.5" x 3.5" x 3" and has an old Dennison label affixed to the bottom signed by Twain's daughter, "Jean Clemens" (authenticated by the Center for Mark Twain Studies). Some loss to the roof's over-hang. Complete with key.
