    Description

John Gardiner: Map of the Northern part of Missouri Territory Signed "John Gardiner." (Washington: John Gardiner, Chief Clerk of the General Land Office, 1818) One page, 23.25" x 18.5". Features the border of northern Missouri and western Illinois and the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Two military districts are noted; "Military Bounty Lands in Illinois Territory" and "Military Bounty Lands" in the western portion, north of the settlement of Boons Lick. Bears a partially printed inscription by Gardiner which reads: "Description of the SW ¼ of Section 13 in Township 53 N of Range 23 W from the Surveyors returns Part Level / Rate prairie Part Level prairie / Rate soil."

Following the War of 1812, areas of land in the west and northwest territories of the expanding United States, known as bounty land, was offered to those who had served. Soldiers had to first apply for Bounty Land Warrants and, if they were granted, used the warrants to apply for grants of land.

Weakened horizontal and vertical folds have separated at their meeting points, resulting in loss of paper and some text. Map has been meticulously repaired to prevent further damage. This is possibly one of the first maps to depict the region.
