[Railroads in Texas]. The Texas Pacific Railway. The Shortest Line to the Great Cotton Grain and Stock Regions of Texas. Saint Louis: Woodward, Tiernan, & Hale, Printers, 1878. Folding brochure. 21" x 20". Elaborately engraved title panel. With timetables, a long history of Texas, and an extract from the Texas Constitution related to homestead laws on one side, and a color map titled "A Geographically Correct Map of the State of Texas" on the other side. Four-inch closed tear on the title panel; four-inch closed tear on the adjoining pane, and a four-inch split in the crease between the two. A few additional small splits and holes in the fold creases and some insect damage at the edge of the title panel.

The Texas and Pacific Railway was created by Federal charter in 1871 with the purpose of building a southern transcontinental railroad from Marshall, Texas to San Diego, California. Though the T&P never made it to San Diego, it did meet up with the Southern Pacific at Sierra Blanca, Texas in 1881. The text of the brochure is a thinly-veiled appeal for immigration to Texas, extolling the virtues of the soil, climate and resources and seeking to play down the state's former reputation: "In the past, Texas has had a traditional reputation for bullies, blackguards and bowie-knives. Her present condition gives the lie to all such slanders...."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
