    Description

[Civil War]. Confederate Map of Charleston Harbor with notes found on the verso. Two pages, 8.25" x 5.25", Charleston, n. d. [circa 1861]. This wonderfully hand drawn map shows the entirety of the harbor including the mouths of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, the city of Charleston, and the settlement of Mount Pleasant. More important are the locations of the fortifications which guarded the city itself such as Fort Sumter, located right in the middle of the entrance of the main channel; Fort Moultrie located on Sullivan's Island and Castle Pinkney on Folly Island, both located on the north side of the harbor; and two breastworks on the southern entrance, one located on Morris Island and one at the location of Old Fort Johnson on James Island. Also indicated is the battery on the south end of the city of Charleston itself.

On the verso are found notes regarding the placement of the fortifications including the distances from Fort Sumter to Charleston, Castle Pinkney [Pinckney], Fort Moultrie, Fort Johnson, and Morris Island. "There is a narrow channel between Morris & James Islands by which [ships] of smaller size can enter the harbor. It can be easily commanded by our men, however. The water is shallow between Fort Sumter Morris Island, & between Sullivan's [obscured by hole] and the Mainland." In case of a possible attack on the city, "...They speak of sinking old vessels in the main ship channel...," however, "Our Battery is a Capital fortification itself You see how effectual Fort Sumter commands the main entrance of the harbor."

Of the breastworks watching over the southern part of the harbor entrance, the author says, "The Breastworks at Old Fort Johnson, on Morris Island, and the Bridge between Sullivan's Island & the mainland have been built within a few days by about 1500 negros & our soldiers. This is making the institution [slavery] defend itself." Folds are very weak and separating in places with some minor loss of paper and text. Small spots of waterstaining. Small hole along the lower edge; other edges are chipped in places.
