Map of Dayton by John W. Van Cleve, 1839. This rare and early Dayton, Ohio, lithographed map measures 34" x 34". Below the title in the lower left corner is printed, "Compiled From the Various Plats on Record, Corrected and Combined by Actual Survey. . . . Scale 20 rods - 330 feet to an Inch. P S Duval Lith: Phila." The map designates numbered lots along city streets, all southeast of the convergence of the Miami and Mad Rivers. Also labeled are ponds, roads, the Miami Canal and basins, "Public Buildings" (such as "Court House", "Methodist", "Catholic", "Free School - House"), and "Manufacturing Establishments" (such as "Flouring Mill", "Saw Mill", and "Clock Factory"). Dayton boasted a population of near 6,000 in 1839.

According to tradition, John W. Van Cleve (1801-1858) was the first male of European decent born in Dayton. His father, Benjamin, had helped found the city in 1796. John was a man of many interests: geology, botany, engineering, and engraving. He was trained as a lawyer and had served as a short time as a Dayton newspaper editor and mayor prior to compiling this map. The map shows signs of fragility along the edges and along some folds. The paper has browned and bears some minor foxing. It is affixed to a canvas backing, which exhibits some foxing and soiling.
