New York City Mayor Stephanus Van Cortlandt's will

Manuscript Will of Stephanus Van Cortlandt. Dated January, 1700, and approved by the courts after his death on November 25, 1700, these three vellum documents, measuring 11" x 15", 24" x 24.5", and 24.25" x 24.75", and leaving detailed instruction for the disbursement of his wealth to his wife and children upon his death, comprise the last will and testament of Stephanus Van Cortlandt, the first native-born mayor of New York City.

Stephanus Van Cortlandt, born in New York, when it was still named New Amsterdam, to Dutch parents, was the patriarch of the prestigious Van Cortlandt family. The Van Cortlandts were an influential political family in New York, being prominent figures of society and politics from the colony's Dutch origins, through to its English colonial period and far into American statehood in the nineteenth century. Folk-influenced Rock artist David Crosby (birth name David Van Cortlandt Crosby) is a descendant of Stephanus.

Signed and countersigned by Stephanus Van Cortlandt and M. Clarkson in the presence of Provincial Governor Rip Van Dam and public official John (Johannes) Abeel.

Condition: Visible folds, fading to sections of ink, small areas of loss near some folds, and moderate toning.
