[Secession]. J. C. Lee Autograph Letter Signed. Five pages, 7.75" x 9.75", January 1, 1861, to John Carey, a U.S. Representative from Ohio, in part: "the first day of 1861 is neatly with us. The government is still in operation in a . . . limping movement, but not a little disgraced in the character of many of its prominent officials. While we nominally have a president and executive officers, it is in fact but the mere form of government. The vitality and vigor are gone." He then compares the South Carolinian delegation, with their "imperious bearing and . . . insolent demands" to a whining child. He scoffs at the idea that the president [Buchanan] has advanced the theory that "to enforce the Federal laws within the limits of a State in which the people in a State capacity have declared them selves [sic] independent of the federal government, is a coercion of a State. Then next that he finds no authority for coercing a State, and as a consequence he invites Secession to its most fantastic tricks . . . The times demand coolness, and on the part of Congress non-action. There is entirely too much consideration and attention given to the Secession movement." Folds.
