Lucas Alamán: Printed Circular. One page, 8.5" x 12", in Spanish, Monterrey, May 16, 1830. With the proposition of an invasion of Mexico from Spain, Lucas Alamán, the Mexican secretary of state, issued this circular on April 24, 1830, to each state governor regarding preparations for the defense of the nation and sending the cost of uniforms and saddles for soldiers both in the infantry and cavalry. Edges are chipped and there is some damage to the lower corners. Scattered spots of foxing.

More Information: Lucas Alamán y Escalada (1792-1853) was a Mexican statesman and historian best remembered for his role in the Law of April 6, 1830, particularly Article 11 which was intended to curb the immigration of foreigners from the United States into Texas. Other articles found in the law led directly to the Anahuac Disturbances of 1832 and, eventually, to the Texas Revolution.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
