Lorenzo Sherwood. Two Anti-Slavery Imprints. Two titles relating to Sherwood's anti-slavery stance and its relation to democracy:

The Slaveholder's Rebellion. New York: C.S. Westcott & Co, 1862. 8vo, 31 pages, with index, publisher's printed wrappers.

Democratic Platform. People's Resolutions, A Republican Form of Government: Definition Manhood Suffrage. New York: C.S. Westcott & Co, 1865. 8vo., 15 pages. Signed and inscribed on top wrapper, "Hon. Henry Van Aerman with the respects of Lorenzo Sherwood of Texas".

Sherwood had been a member of the Texas Legislature but was driven out in 1856 due to his abolitionist views. When the Civil War started, he took a pro-Union stance and eventually settled in New York. His speeches told of his experiences in the south, as well as his views that slavery was a threat to the democracy of the country.

Condition: Light toning throughout, darker on paper wrappers. Minor wear at edges, otherwise very fine.
