    Description

An 1851 Pressler Map of Texas

    K. W. Presler [sic] & V. Völker. Map of Texas. Compiled from surveys at the Land Office of Texas. Wolfenbuttel: L. Holle, 1851. 19" x 26.8", originally issued folded in green boards. Title appears in both English and German on map and on boards, with Pressler's name misspelled in all but the English listing on the boards.

A native of Prussia, Karl Wilhelm "Charles" Pressler (1823-1907) studied cartography and surveying in Weisensee before joining the Adelsverein and immigrating to Texas in 1846. Almost immediately he began work for Jacob De Cordova, leading his surveying expeditions and assisting him on his well-known 1849 map of Texas. In 1850 he began work with the General Land Office, a post he would hold for 49 years. The following year, 1851, he would produce the very first of his maps of Texas. It is published in Germany specifically to promote immigration to Texas.

An identical map sold at Sloan Auctions in 1998 for $29,900, and the description notes: "This two-sheet map appeared in George M. von Ross' 1851 immigrant guide, Der nordamerikanische Freistaat Texas (see Graff 3582 & Howes R55)." The version offered here was issued folded with its own boards that same year. This is the first of its kind we have seen.

For the purpose of restoration, the map was removed from the boards. The quality of the paper is not ideal for folding, and we have chosen to leave it detached from the boards. The front paste down is inscribed: "Presented by Guenther Sisters New Braunfels Texas Sept. 6, 1940."

Condition: The map has been deacidified and stabilized. Staining remains where cello tap used at an earlier time was removed. It has been backed with archival tissue, with only small chips of loss occurring along the left margin. Additional loss occurs at most folds, particularly at intersections. Original boards are present, and have light soiling and dampstaining.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
