JUNE 12TH, A DATE WHICH WILL LIVE IN FAME. In the annals of baseball history, June 12, 1939 is arguably the most glorious date. A confluence of three major events were celebrated that day in Cooperstown. At that point, the game had long been accepted as an institution born in 1839. Having been assailed by gamblers, pretenders and in-fighting, it had survived and, a hundred years hence, promised to prosper. By that date, furthermore, another very worth crop of retired superstars were wellcredentialed for induction. And finally, on that date, the Baseball Hall of Fame graduated from the abstract, to become a permanent and tangible shrine for all to revere. The gathering that day was applauded as the "Cavalcade of Baseball." And indeed, that gala witnessed baseball’s centennial, it welcomed nine newly inducted members (Gehrig was elected later in ‘39), and it dedicated the finished monument to honor the greatest of the game. Presented here is a ticket for admission to that milestone event. At 5 1/2" x 2 3/4", this relic is about VG. It has several moderate creases (although it appears that these were sustained when printed), and light-mild corner wear. A border tear appears on the reverse as well. All these imperfections must be set aside however, as the crowning glory of Babe Ruth’s autograph radiates from the reverse of this ticket. This is a penciled signature of "9-10" quality. June 12, 1939 was a day of exultation, and to grace its memory is this most appropriate autograph. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
