DescriptionJuan Jose Elguezabal. 1834 Letter Describing the Response to a Comanche "Visit" and Theft of Horses. One and a half pages, 8" x 10". Santa Rosa, February 28, 1834. Spanish text. Light toning with a few small areas of foxing, one small hole in the integral second page not affecting text, with the usual fold creases; otherwise, bright, legible and near fine.
An extraordinary letter which reads, in part: "The Comanches have just made us a visit and the results are that they took about 70 head...Uncle Lugardo is after them with a troop, but I don't hold any hope because this old man is good for nothing. Nevertheless at the moment I received the news I anticipated advising Galan to direct a troop toward the head of the San Rodrigo to cut off the escape...". Then Elguezabal laments the poor shape of the troops under his command, writing in part: "...the misery and bad shape of this troop that covers the line of the frontier is due to the lack of salaries for so far back and the citizens having allowed the Barbarians to take the horses needed to give chase...". A great content letter that gives color to the conditions so prevalent on the frontier during the period.
Elguezabal was appointed governor ad interim of Texas in August of 1834. From the Taking of Texas Collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
