    Description

John Wilkes Booth: Assorted Ephemera. Due to a successful career as an actor and armed with some disposable income, John Wilkes Booth attempted to cash in on the Pennsylvania oil boom of the 1859-1865 period. In partnership with two other men, he formed a company called "Dramatic Oil" (later renamed "Fuller Farm Oil") and drilled a well in Franklin, Pennsylvania. The well performed nicely, but a misguided effort to "expand" the output with the use of dynamite resulted in catastrophe. With the election of Lincoln and Southern reverses on the battlefield, Booth sold out his interest on November 27, 1864, posting a $6,000 loss. We offer a 7 ¼" x 11" blank stock certificate for the "Pit Hole and Pittsfield Oil Company" of Venango County, Pennsylvania (1860's, minor chipping to edges) with a similar certificate for the "Pit Hole & Kenawha Oil Company" of Philadelphia, capitalized at $500,000. These "association" display pieces are sold together with a rare cover depicting Booth issued during the pursuit, titled "Hunt the villain down."
