John Wilkes Booth: 1863 Boston Museum Playbill. 5" x 13.75" playbill for the January 20, 1863 performance of Booth in "The Lady of Lyons" at the Boston Museum. Booth appeared as the character Claude Melnotte in the Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer's play. The playbill also announced that Booth will appear the next evening as Pescara in "The Apostate." His performance in "The Lady of Lyons" was the second of twenty-four Boston appearances at the Boston Museum for Booth from mid-January to mid-February 1863. He would perform in "The Lady of Lyons" again, on January 24. The same night (January 20) that Booth was appearing in this play at the Boston Museum, the famous actress Laura Keene was performing close by at the Howard Athenaeum. She would perform in Ford's Theatre the night Booth shot Abraham Lincoln and would attempt to comfort the wounded president in the presidential box. The playbill was printed by F.A. Searle in Boston. There is a printing defect on the bottom quarter of the playbill, which does not affect the reading of the text.
