    Description

John Wilkes Booth: 1862 Boston Museum Playbill. 4.75" x 12.5" playbill for a May 14, 1862 performance of Booth in the leading role of the "Robbers" at the Boston Museum. This was the third of twelve appearances of Booth in a May 1862 engagement at the Boston Museum. In this performance, Booth played the role of Charles de Moor in Frederick Schiller's tragedy. He would perform in this role again during the Boston run, on May 21, 1862. The playbill also announced that on the coming Thursday, Booth "will appear as RICHARD THIRD," and that the Friday performance would be a "Benefit of Mr. J. Wilkes Booth! On which occasion he will appear as HAMLET!" The playbill was printed in Boston by F. A. Searle.

The Boston Museum opened in 1841 and hosted a wax museum, a natural history museum, and an art museum in addition to theatrical performances. Numerous famous actors and actresses entertained audiences at the Boston Museum, including Edwin and John Wilkes Booth, William Warren, and Kate Reignolds.
