John Hancock: Important Document Signed as President of the Continental Congress, Appointing Bunker Hill Hero Benjamin Haskell as an Ensign in the Continental Army. Signed January 1, 1776, it appoints him to the company of Captain Ebenezer Brewster in the tenth regiment of foot command by Colonel Samuel H. Parsons. In June of 1775 he had been serving under Colonel B. Ruggles as part of the American force entrenched on Breed's Hill, where the first assault from British General Howe's troops took place. His unit then retreated to Bunker Hill, where he fought near Dr. Joseph Warren, one of the Revolution's early leaders. When Warren fell, Haskell assisted in carrying his body from the field.
John Hancock's iconic autograph is among the most sought-after of any historical figure. Particularly desirable is a Revolutionary War document like this one, signed by him as President of the Continental Congress. Condition is basically excellent although it has been laid down on board, presumably to stabilize typical weakness along the fold lines. One small ½" area of loss where two fold lines intersect. The Hancock signature is particularly sharp and bold. 11.375" x 9".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
