John Hancock: Fine Signed Document with Revolutionary War Association. 1792 pay warrant, signed as Governor of Massachusetts, measuring 7.25" x 8.25", authorizing payment of one quarter's wages of 50 pounds to the Inspector of the Commonwealth's foundries, Colonel Lewis de Marsequelle (AKA Lewis Ansart). Also signed on verso by de Marsequelle.

Lewis de Marsequelle was a Frenchman who offered his services to the Colonists during the War. An expert in making cannons, he was appointed colonel in charge of the foundries producing these crucial weapons for the War effort. He was also assigned for a time as assistant to French Vice Admiral D'Estaing, whose naval forces played a key role in the ultimate defeat of the British. After the War, de Marsequelle became a naturalized citizen and public servant.

This is a fine document with great display appeal. Appearance is excellent, with typical fine fold lines. Strong, clear example of Hancock's iconic signature. Partial separations along the fold lines have been repaired and reinforced almost invisibly by a skilled paper conservator.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
