    Description

John Dillinger: Personally-Owned Artifacts and Family Photos. Extensive archive of materials related to notorious gangster and Public Enemy #1, John Herbert Dillinger. The material passed down to a second cousin of Dillinger, a great-granddaughter of Dillinger's grandfather Mathias. The artifacts include: a pair of leather baby shoes, a christening gown, an infant nightgown, an adult's nightshirt and an adult's long-sleeve white shirt. According to the consignor and family tradition, these all belonged to John Dillinger. Many of the items in the collection are pictured in the self-published book by crime author Tony Stewart, titled "The Dillinger Family Reunion: A Genealogical Record of Ancestors", a copy of which is included. Specifically, the christening gown, infant nightgown, baby shoes, John Wilson Dillinger's family Bible and numerous family photos.

Besides the shoes and four articles of clothing, the archive includes a 31" x 6" panoramic photo (recent copy image) of a 1908 Dillinger family reunion in Indianapolis that shows a 5-year old Dillinger and his father. Most of the subjects are identified in the Stewart book or in accompanying research documents. There is the 1856 family Bible owned by Dillinger's father. The 4-page "Family Record" includes entries for Dillinger's grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles (detached cover and moderate water damage). There is a large binder of genealogical information on the Dillinger and extended families.

Of particular interest is the large binder filled with family photos going back to the 1870s or 80s, newspaper articles and clippings, research material, original documents and assorted ephemera. Many photos post-date or are concurrent with the death of Dillinger, depicting extended family members up until the 1980s. The photos are mostly all original, but there are some duplicate copy images. There are photos of Dillinger's grandparents, parents, siblings and a goodly number of Dillinger himself. We have selected some of the more interesting ones for your perusal. These include his grandparents posed behind a picket fence, a studio portrait of his parents, a wonderful photo of Dillinger in his toy wagon (inscribed in pencil on verso as "Johnny Dillinger"), two photos of his grandmother Mary Brown Dillinger, a real photo postcard of a cranky "Johnny" wearing a beanie while seated on the front stoop of his house, a photo of Dillinger in U.S. Navy uniform, a postcard of Dillinger holding tommy gun and fake wooden gun signed "John Dillinger Sr" and a small snapshot of Dillinger's father & granddaughter Frances "on tour with carnival" capitalizing on the notoriety generated by Dillinger's death.

This is a great opportunity to acquire some one-of-a-kind and personal items associated with the most famous gangster of the 20th century.
