Jefferson Davis' Cloak Button and Jefferson Davis Pen Nib from the Collection of Alfred B. Purinton of Company I, 4th Michigan Cavalry. The nib measures 1.5" and was most likely with Davis at his capture. The button (approximately .75" in diameter) is from a woman's cloak that Davis wore during his failed attempt to escape. Included is a copy of a picture from a magazine showing the cloak with caption reading: "The Raglan Worn by President Davis When Captured By The 4th Michigan Cavalry. The Raglan Belonged To His Wife (Courtesy National Archives)". The buttons pictured are an identical match for the button offered here. The button is sown to a note written in pencil: "Taken from the disguise worn by Jef Davis when captured"; said note is attached to a second note that reads. in part: "This button belongs to Miss Purinton, Her father, Mr. A. B. Purinton, was one of four, who captured Jefferson Davis..." The pen nip is taped to a card reading: "Pen belonged to Jeff Davis." Purinton was breveted first lieutenant for his actions during the capture.

Together with a copy of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine (February 1890) with an account of the capture of Davis written by John Nicolay and John Hay and various newspaper clippings, including an article about Purinton.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
