James "Kid" Lewis: Documents Relating to the Death of Arizona Outlaw. Two documents relating to the coroner's jury verdict on the death of the Arizona outlaw James "Kid" Lewis. 1) ALS by members of the coroner's jury, Nicolas Olguin Ranch, Graham County, Arizona Territory, to G. W. Musgrave, September 25, 1883, 8 "x 10" lined bifold. Jury members write to Musgrave that they render the following verdict: "Supposed body, recognized as James Lewis, and we find said Lewis cause to his death by Pistol or Rifle shots from parties to us unknown. The description of said shots was delivered to us this day to said G. W. Musgrave and we vouch to correctness of same to best of our knowledge." One-page letter with Musgrave's endorsement on verso of first page. Page four of the bifold contains a note by Musgrave stating that the letter was "Filed & recorded in my office in the town of Clifton September 25th AD 1883." Page four also includes a note stating that the verdict was filed on October 5, 1883. 2) A folded 8" x 6 1/8" folded fragment of a larger sheet of lined paper that contains the following written in pencil: "Territory vs./ Nicolas Olguin/case dismissed." Jim "Kid" Lewis (circa 1863-1883) was born in Missouri but spent most of his time in Arizona Territory and was reputed to have been a member of Billy the Kid's gang in New Mexico. He suspected of killing G. W. Gray during a robbery in the Arizona Territory town of Clifton, but was never convicted due to lack of evidence. He was suspected of killing two men in New Mexico, and killed his girlfriend, which he claimed was accidental. Lewis was killed on September 24, 1883 by a posse of Mexicans led by Nicolas Olguin as he as was travelling with three other men. His body was found on Olguin Ranch. The letter has folds and a few minor stains, otherwise it and the other document are in good condition. Two nice documents associated with the death of an Arizona outlaw.
