James Cox. Historical and Biographical Record of The Cattle Industry and the Cattlemen of Texas and Adjacent Territory without frontispiece. St. Louis: Woodward & Tierman Printing Company, 1895. First edition. 4to, 743 pages. Lacking the colored frontispiece. Illustrations and plates. Original full brown blind stamped pictorial morocco with title in gilt on front cover and spine and decorative endpapers. The first 293 pages concern the history of the cattle industry, but the bulk of the book, nearly 400 double-columned pages, is devoted to biographical sketches of 449 cattlemen. There is also a short section concerning the importance of the railroads on the cattle industry. Front and rear hinges are cracking; spine is broken in various places between pages 264 and 313. Boards are heavily worn; spine is worn and chipped at the head and foot. Light, scattered foxing and toning. Some pages are lightly chipped along the edges.

Reference: Adams Herd 593: "Very rare. One of the 'big four' cattle books. An important book on the history of the cattle industry, and no collector's library would be complete without it. It is rarely found with the frontispiece, and since it is an unusually heavy book and the leather has deteriorated with age, its back strip is usually missing or in bad condition. It is said that the scarcity of this book is due to the fact that nearly all the editions were lost in a warehouse fire." Jenkins Basic Texas Books 34: "This compendium on Texas cattle and cattlemen is also one of the rarest Texas books." Howes J820. Reese 24: "the cornerstone of any range library."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
