Jack Hays: A Scarce Personal Bank Draft Signed by the Legendary Texas Ranger. Hays moved to Texas in 1836, fought in the Texas Revolution, and became an early leader in the newly-formed Texas Rangers. He is famous for having been the first man to use a six-shooter in fighting Indians on the Plains of Texas, leading his force of fourteen rangers to defeat a band of some seventy Comanche, thirty of whom they killed.

In 1850 Hays moved to San Francisco and promptly got himself elected sheriff there. This 1851 check, signed "Sheriff", is from that San Francisco period. Hays' signature is scarce and sought-after in any form, and is especially displayable in this attractive form, made out in his hand as well. 6.375" x 2.75", and in excellent condition.
