This magnificent 24" piece (weighing 72 pounds!) was sculptured by Andrew Lester in 1974.  It depicts Thorpe as he appeared around the time of the 1912 Olympics, and was intended for presentation to the US Olympic Committee Hall of Fame, but was never presented.  Born in 1907, Lester, a great-grandson of Davy Crockett, of whom he created a bust, which was dedicated at the Alamo in 1925, specialized in sculptures of Western figures, particularly Native Americans (hence his interest in Thorpe, whom he had met in 1932).  He also did a noteworthy bust of chief Ben Whiteshield, displayed at the Black Kettle Museum.  Other works are displayed at The Aerospace Museum, and Yosemite National Park.

While we must confess we are not great fans of commemorative sculptures, etc., this wonderful bust ranks absolutely at the top of the genre, in our opinion.  It has a quality and elegance which would fit in even the most sophisticated setting.  Wonderful item for one of America's athletic legends.  (Note: This item will be packed and shipped by an independent firm, at reasonable cost, to be paid by buyer).   Please note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, additional shipping costs may apply.
