IMPORTANT 19TH CENTURY BASEBALL POSTER AND LETTER.

In Sept. 1878 the Secretary of the Syracuse Baseball Club writes to Natl. League Pres. (and recently enshrined HOF member) Wm. Hulbert to petition for membership in the League. We reproduce here this great letter:
    W.A. Hulbert, Esq.
    My Dear Sir,
I understand that there is to be a meeting of the League at Chicago on the 11th and that at such meeting
applications for admission to the League are in order.  At a meeting of the Star stockholders and friends of the
National Game held on the 4th with the subject of enrolling the Stars under the League Banner for the next session was thoroughly discussed. It seemed to be the sense of that meeting that our Association should apply for admission to your body, but the matter was left for ultimate settlement in our travel of direction. Although we have done well financially in the International Association and have the Pennant nearly within our grasp yet we are by no means satisfied with the workings and status of the Association.  The Stars reputation is too good and the visiting clubs too poor to venture another year in the International-in other words Syracusians are educated up to a better standard and that standard I am satisfied can only be found in the League. If I had taken your advice preferred early in the season as to the relative advantages of the two Associations I should have played the part of a wise man.  Experience was taught me that your views were sound and correct. The other members of the Star directions share these views. We have therefore decided to apply for membership in the League, trusting that you still entertain the same views as to admitting the Stars as you did in the Spring. I remain Very truly yours, Robert Townsend, Secty. Star B.B.A.
The letter is clearly readable, although there is some age browning along the fold lines. The signature and I.D. as "Secty. Star B.B.A." are great. Quite probably this letter served as the catalyst for the team's affiliation with the N.L. in 1879. The letter is accompanied by a great lithographed poster by "Syracuse Lith. Eng. and Print. Co., Syracuse, NY." The 12x181/2" poster pictures the entire 1879 team, with names and positions below, and is in Ex+ condition. Although there are no HOFers pictured, several played in the majors for Washington, St. Louis, or Buffalo during the 1870's and 80's, in addition to being on the 1879 Syracuse (N.L.) team. A great pair of historic 19th century items! NOTE: Additional shipping may apply. Min. 1000.
