Graham County, Arizona: A. G. Hill Becomes George Olney. W. G. Staubly, editor of the Clifton Clarion (Arizona Territory), signed a sworn affidavit that his paper did publish a notice (attached to affidavit) by A.G. Hill of his intention to apply "Hon. District Court of the First Judicial District of Arizona in and for the County of Graham" for a decree to change his name to "George A. Olney," for a period of four consecutive weeks (28 days). The printed form, 8" x 10," is dated April 29, 1887 and signed by Staubly and by J. T. Fitzgerald, Probate Judge of Graham County. The Clifton Clarion was published from 1883 to 1889. A. G. Hill, future Graham County Sheriff, may have wanted to change his name due to the fact that his brother, Joe Hill, was associated with the Clanton Gang and other outlaws. A 2.25" x 1.25" newspaper clipping of Hill's notice is pasted to the affidavit. The affidavit has two horizontal folds, with a slight 3/8" tear on the right margin at the bottom fold, otherwise it is good condition.
