Gideon Welles' Announcement of President Lincoln's Death to Navy Department. One page with integral blank, 5.5" x 8.5", Washington, April 15, 1865. In this broadside, bordered in black and issued as General Order, No. 51 from the Department of the Navy just hours after the president's death, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles announces "with profound sorrow to the officers and men of the Navy and Marine Corps the death of ABRAHAM LINCOLN, late President of the United States. Stricken down by the hand of an assassin . . . when surrounded by his family and friends, he lingered a few hours after receiving the fatal wound, and died at seven o'clock twenty-two minutes this morning."

In recognition, he orders that "officers of the Navy and Marine Corps will, as a manifestation of their respect for the exalted character, eminent position, and inestimable public services of the late President, and as an indication of their sense of the calamity which the county has sustained, wear the usual badge of mourning for six months." In addition to the badge of mourning, Welles further orders that "upon the day following the receipt of this order, the commandants of squadrons, navy yards, and stations will cause the ensign of every vessel . . . to be hoisted at half-mast, and a gun to be fired every half hour, beginning at sunrise and ending at sunset."

Condition: Affixed along the left edge to a backing sheet of cardstock to an overall size of 10.5" x 13.5". Separation and spots of paper loss along the folds have been repaired with archival tissue. Small pinholes at the corners. Moderately toned and foxed.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
