    President Washington approves import duties on tobacco, snuff, and sugar

    George Washington Approved Printed Congressional Act. Six pages with period wraps, 8.25" x 13.75", loosely string bound. (Philadelphia: Childs & Swaine, 1794). At top: "THIRD CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: AT THE FIRST SESSION, Begun and held at the City of Philadelphia, in the state of Pennsylvania, on Monday, the second of December, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three. - An ACT laying certain duties upon Snuff and Refined Sugar."

    Passed by the Third Congress and bearing Washington's printed signature, "Go : WASHINGTON" as President on the final page dated June 5, 1794, the act laid a four cents per pound duty on imported tobacco, twelve cents per pound on snuff and four cents per pound on refined sugar.

    Also bears the printed signatures of Frederick Augusts Muhlenberg, as Speaker of the House, and Ralph Izard, as President of the Senate pro tempore.

    Docketed in an unknown hand on the back wrap: "An Act laying certain Duties upon Snuff and refined Sugars Decr 2nd 1794".

    A scarce imprint; Evans 27870. NAIP w014504. The North American Imprints Project sources only five examples of this imprint. Flattened folds, with toning a bit darker along said folds on the last page. Light dampstaining to bottom wrap.
