    George Washington and Family: Newspaper Obituaries including front-page eulogy by "Lighthorse" Harry Lee: "First in War, First in Peace... ." 1) September 9, 1789 issue of the "Gazette of the United States". The third page features an account on the death of Washington's mother Mary (small paper loss to lower corner of last page). 2) January 9, 1800 issue of the "Independent Chronicle". Black bordered with details of President Washington's funeral procession on third page. 3) January 13, 1800 issue of the Connecticut "Courant" detailing Washington's funeral procession and with a proclamation by President John Adams declaring the 22nd day of February as a day of public mourning. (contemporary ink inscribed date at upper right corner). 4) January 15, 1800 issue of "The Spectator" of New York. Front page with a eulogy of Washington by "Lighthorse" Harry Lee: "First in War, First in Peace." 5) February 15, 1800 issue of "The Spectator" of New York. Front page features details of Washington's will. 6) & 7) January 18 and January 22, 1800 issues of the "Columbian Centinel" of Boston, both featuring front pages containing "Minutes of Funeral Solemnities in Honor of the Sainted Washington." 8) June 1, 1802 issue of "The Mercury and New England Palladium" of Boston, with an obituary of Martha Washington on third page. (ink inscription along top edge of front page, with some slight dampstaining and seam separation). Eight newspapers altogether. Overall very good, gently toned and creased with some minor chipping along edges.
