George B. McClellan: Ultra Rare Perpetual Calendar. One of the more interesting novelties from the 1860-1885 period are perpetual calendars. These metal discs usually had some patriotic emblem or portrait and a moveable panel on the reverse. We have seen examples with ferrotype portraits of Robert Anderson, Winfield Scott, Lady Liberty, U. S. Grant and Lincoln (beardless and bearded). This is the first McClellan we have seen. It measures 1 ½" across and retains almost all of its original silvering, now nicely toned. The circular frame has been flattened, mostly on the reverse. The portrait has a small, circular blister to the right of McClellan's moustache. If viewed straight on, this defect is barely noticeable. Given its rarity ("Go find another!"), it's something most collectors should be willing to live with.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
