    A Copy of McClellan's Bayonet Exercise Previously Owned by a V.M.I. Superintendent

    George B. McClellan. Manual of Bayonet Exercise. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo, and Co., 1852. 12mo, 106 pages. Illustrated with diagrams. Cloth over boards with blindstamped decorations and titles in gilt on spine. Foxed; boards are worn. Bold period ink script ID on front free endpaper, "J. R. Waddy/4th Arty U.S.A." A second name appears on the front pastedown and title page, "Scoroship [?]/V[irginia].M[ilitary].I[nstitute]." A third inscription is also featured on the front free endpaper: "Major - Please send me a Register of Officers & Cadets direct to me at Fort Randall N.Y." Library stamp on title page.

    More Information: This book was once owned by VMI professor and superintendent Scott Shipp (1839-1917), who commanded the VMI Cadet Battalion at the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864, where he was wounded in the face and shoulder by artilley fire.
