George Armstrong Custer: A Lurid and Fanciful Early Account of Little Big Horn, Published July 13, 1876 in the Salt Lake City Deseret (Sic) Evening News, Utah Territory

The newspaper erroneously reported that Crazy Horse was killed in the fighting. It also claimed that Rain-in-the-Face "cut the heart from Custer's dead body, put it on a pole, and a grand war dance was held around it. The Indians were jubilant, boastful, and sanguine of making better terms on account of their success." In reality, although Custer was stripped of his clothing, his body was spared the ritual mutilation performed on most of the dead, clearly a gesture of respect.

Another front-page article deals with the charges against Reno for having failed to come to Custer's assistance, an interesting insight into how quickly these issues came to public attention. Overall condition of the newspaper is excellent. 18" x 25".
