George Armstrong Custer: A Fabulous 1870 Letter Turning Down his Application to Serve the German Military. Custer was always restless and ambitious, and apparently with the Franco-Prussian War looming he saw a possible opportunity. Custer had made a discreet inquiry through a Pennsylvania contact (unfortunately his signature is illegible), who advises Custer that he had forwarded Custer's inquiry to the Minister of the North German Confederation, who had replied that "while highly appreciating the sentiments inspiring your offer he has no instructions authorizing him to make arrangements with military men desiring to enter the North German army as volunteer officers." But the German "has, however, asked for definite instructions on that point and will advise me as soon as they are received. Should they be such as to favor your design, I shall be glad to let you know." Had Custer managed to secure a commission his career and life might have followed a less tragic path. 2 pp., 4.75" x 7.75", excellent condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
