Ink Drawing for an Unused Illustration, Signed by Garth Williams, With Notes from Author E. B. White

Garth Williams. Unused illustration for Stuart Little.

Garth Williams. Original preliminary drawing for an unused illustration for
Stuart Little, 1945: George in the cellar. Ink on paper with some white gouache correction. 7.875 x 12 inches. Signed in full by Williams. With Williams' notations in pencil: "p. 24 (two submitted) B" and "to be touched up before printing"; also with his instructions that the final illustration measure three and one-half inches across. Paper clip indentation at upper left and a couple of shallow bends. Else fine.

Two illustrations for page 24 were submitted to E. B. White for consideration: this, and the drawing of George on the rowing machine that ultimately appeared in the book (that drawing was originally designated as "A"). Along with this unused alternate drawing (drawing "B") are two small pieces of yellow paper, with notes to Williams from E. B. White and from a member of the editorial staff at Harper. The first note, handwritten in pencil by E. B. White reads: "I prefer this picture [A]. The rowing machine is OK by me: George is fine -- just the right age." Below that, in ink and in an unknown hand: "Mr. Williams -- We're putting through 'A'." The second note, also from White, reads simply: "Not this." Both small scraps measure approximately 4.25 x 5.5 inches, both with paper clip indentations. From the Estate of Garth Williams.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
