Six Detailed Pencil Drawings, Including a Possible Self-Portrait, All Initialed by Garth Williams

Garth Williams. Six preliminary drawings (some of which were not used) for The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, 1960. Pencil on paper. Six sheets (four of which are onionskin) measuring 11 x 8.5 inches, three in landscape format. A couple with shallow folds, a couple with tape stains which appear to have come from the preproduction process. All initialed by Garth Williams. All in generally fine condition.

Williams' distinctive soft pencil drawings were always markedly different from his pen and ink book illustrations. These six detailed drawings are perfectly charming and showcase the cute animals and gentle style for which he is, perhaps, best known. The early version of illustration #7 in which Tucker and Harry show Chester Times Square is particularly appealing in its sweetness and warmth. Also of note is the unused drawing with Chester in his matchbox atop a stack of Time magazines--surely that is a tongue-in-cheek self-portrait of Garth Williams staring out from the cover. Six delightful drawings from the master of children's illustration. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
