Description

    [Richard Blythe]. Jigsaw Puzzle, Circa 1784. Measuring 9" x 11" when complete, showing a hand colored map of England and Wales, composed of approximately seventy-five wooden pieces (two or three pieces are missing). Signed by W. Reader Parkes. Housed in a 5.5" x 6.5" x 1.75" wooden box with "England and Wales" pasted to the lid. Once belonging to Richard "Dick" Blythe, half of the public relations duo Bruno and Blythe which famously represented Charles Lindbergh on his transatlantic flight to Paris. Given to him by his grandmother, it was located in a trunk full of family heirlooms. With a period map of England and Wales, signed "Wm. Parkes 1784" at the margin. Map is moderately toned and foxed. And two identical newspaper clippings dated March 15, 1933, telling the story of Blythe and the puzzle. From the Richard Blythe Aviation Collection.
