Fred Darge. Landscape Painting. Measures 19.5" x 15.5" (sight), n. d. Oil on canvas. Darge presents a small waterfall in a wooded landscape with a large tree and boulder in the foreground. Signed "F. Darge" at lower right. Framed to an overall size of 23" x 19".

Friedrich Ernst "Fred" Darge (1900-1978), known for his paintings of scenes and landscapes from the American West, immigrated to the United States (through Port Arthur, Texas) from Germany in 1924. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1933, left his wife and son and settled in San Antonio. Following the Second World War, where he served in the South Pacific and as an illustrator for North American Aviation, he toured throughout Texas and New Mexico in a converted army ambulance, painting along the way. While continued traveling Texas well into his 70s, he spent most of his later years at his studio in Dallas and as an instructor at the Dallas Art Association.
