    Description

Farm Laborer's Agreement, Circa 1868. Two pages of bifolium, 8" x 12.5", laborers' employment contract for a plantation at Lafourche Parish. This agreement employs twenty-one men under Mr. A. Brousseau, for between 50 to 75 cents per day. Each man has signed their mark next to their written name. Although it is not explicitly said, it is likely that these laborers are all freedmen.

The contract reads, in part: "Mr. A. Brousseau agrees to employ the undersigned laborers on his plantation at Lafourche for the year 1868 at the wages affixed to each of their names, payable three fourths (¾) at the end of each month and the balance (¼) one fourth at the end of the year. It is hereby agreed that during rolling, laborers will work at night, when they are wanted, and also at any other time during the year when necessity may require it. Working hours for all the week except Sunday, during the whole year, will be from day light in the morning till day light ending at night, with an allowance of one hour and a half for dinner and three quarters of an hour for breakfast, each day. It is understood that cartmen and ploughmen will tend and curry their mules, in taking them in the stables at night, and before taking them out in the morning, taking good care of them. All time lost for whatever cause will be charged to the laborer, who will supply himself with food and clothing and all other wants at his own expense".

Condition: Toned throughout, mail folds have caused weakness and some separation in places. Slight creasing along top edge. Writing is clear and bold.
