    Description

Whaleship "Metacom" Scrimshaw and Vertebrae Cane. This hand-crafted cane was produced by a crew member of the whaler " Metacom" (launched in 1841, sank off Pago Pago 1860). It is 32.5" long. The solid 2" round knob handle has scrimshawed decorations of the "Ship Metacom 1842", two whales and the North Star. There is a ivory ferrule with four turnings. The shaft is an iron rod onto which eighty-five fish vertebrae have been threaded. Each has three holes where colored wax has been poured in. The metal shaft is slightly bent and there are dents in the metal tip. It has been in the same family since the 1940s after its purchase in an antique shop in Raleigh, North Carolina.
