US 48-Star Flag Flown Over the Capitol on July 4, 1912. 20' x 12' printed wool flag with 48 stars in a row pattern (8 x 6). Two rope loops in hoist/sleeve. One star inscribed "I. E. E./ D.C. 4 July 1912". The canvas hoist has stenciled lettering: "Guaranteed Fast Colors CAPITOL" while it is hand-inscribed "Washington Flown 1912". Fraying at fly end with numerous lateral tears at that end, the longest of which is 80". These can be repaired. According to research notes accompanying the flag, this was the first 48-star flag flown over the Capitol on the first day authorized to fly on July 4, 1912, per President Taft's Executive Order No. 1556 (24 June 1912) which standardized the pattern of rows at 8 across and 6 down. Sold with Flag Heritage Foundation inventory sheet. From the Dr. Clarence R. Rungee Collection.
